Artist Residency Program
Create. Collaborate. Connect.
At NALU Art Gallery, we believe that art thrives through connection, cultural exchange, and new experiences.
Our artist residency program invites artists and creatives from around the world to spend time at NALU, located in the beautiful surroundings of Punta Sur, Isla Mujeres. The residency offers an opportunity to step away from your usual environment, develop your practice, experiment with new ideas, and connect with a creative community.
Whether you are looking to develop a new body of work, explore different materials and techniques, collaborate with other creatives, or simply immerse yourself in the inspiration of the Caribbean, we offer several residency pathways to suit different artists and projects.
Our Residency Options
01 — Partially Sponsored Residency
Our partially sponsored residencies are offered to artists whose practice and proposed project are a strong fit with NALU’s artistic program.
Depending on the project and availability, NALU may provide partial support towards accommodation, studio access, workshop facilities, or materials.
Artists are encouraged to use their time at NALU to develop a new body of work or explore a previously discussed project. At the end of the residency, there may be an opportunity for selected works to be acquired by NALU Art Gallery or placed with the gallery on consignment.
Each partially sponsored residency is individually discussed and agreed upon before the artist’s arrival.
02 — Art Exchange Residency
Our Art Exchange Residency is designed around an exchange between the artist and NALU.
Residencies can range from approximately one week to one month and may include accommodation at Villa NALU, as
well as one staff meal per day from Monday to Saturday.
Artists are invited to propose a project or body of work they would like to develop during their stay. We ask applicants to share examples of their previous work and an indication of their usual pricing so that we can establish an exchange that is fair and appropriate for both sides.
The exchange may involve artwork created during the residency, existing works contributed to NALU, or a combination of both. The number and value of works will depend on the length of the residency, the artist’s practice, and the individual agreement.
Artists may also have the opportunity to leave additional works with NALU Art Gallery on consignment.
03 — Work Exchange Residency
Our Work Exchange Residency is focused on collaboration, skills, and creative contribution.
Artists and creatives contribute an agreed number of hours during their stay in exchange for accommodation and access to NALU’s studio and workshop spaces.
Depending on the individual’s experience and skills, collaborations may include photography, video and content creation, social media, teaching workshops, assisting with gallery activities, exhibition preparation, or other creative projects.
Artists are also encouraged to continue developing their own practice and creating work during their stay.
Your Time at NALU
A residency at NALU is more than simply a place to work. It is an opportunity to experience Isla Mujeres, meet other artists and creatives, and become part of the creative environment that we are building at NALU.
Our approach to residencies is intentionally flexible. Every artist, project, and collaboration is different, and we prefer to
create arrangements that are mutually beneficial rather than follow a one-size-fits-all model.
